Belly Button Surgery

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your belly button you may be a candidate for belly button correction (umbilicoplasty).

Your belly button is scar tissue left over from where the umbilical cord joined you to your mother's placenta when you were in her womb. Similar to fingerprints, no two belly buttons are exactly alike. The abdominal wall is made up of various layers, including skin, muscle and fat. They are all fused together at your belly button.

We all have subcutaneous fat that plumps up the skin all over our body. This fat can’t lift the skin at the belly button because the skin at that location is fused to your abdominal wall. That's why the belly button is normally concave.

Why do some people have an ‘outie’ and some an ‘innie’? With the 'outie', there is a protuberant mass of subcutaneous scar tissue between the bottom of the belly button and the muscle wall of the abdomen. This scar turns the concave 'innie' into a convex 'outie'.

Genetics, weight loss and gain, pregnancy and umbilical hernias can also play an important role in determining the size and shape of the belly button.

The Umbilicoplasty procedure is quick, taking only 30 to 90 minutes to do, and is performed under local or twilight anaesthesia. Much of the muscle work can be done with an endoscope to minimise scars, and any scars that do remain are usually concealed inside the navel. There is little swelling, bruising or discomfort, and the results are immediately visible. Your new belly button will look completely natural.

You may return to work or other daily activities the same day. The sutures are usually dissolvable, eliminating the need to return to the doctor to have them removed. Usually, Umbilicoplasty results are permanent, unless patients gain significant amounts of weight or become pregnant following surgery.

Patients who decide to undergo belly button surgery may appear to be making only the slightest adjustment, but this small change can create a greater sense of poise and pride in appearance. Umbilicoplasty gives patients confidence in their appearance and allows them to enjoy a full range of fashions without feeling self-conscious. The procedure is safe, quick, inexpensive, and provides immediate results with little risk of complications or side effects.
