Lip Reduction
Lip Reduction is a procedure to reduce and reshape excessively large lips.
While it is much more common to increase the size of lips with filler products, patients whose lips are proportionately larger than the other structures on their face can benefit aesthetically and psychologically from lip reduction surgery. You might consider lip reduction if the size or shape of your lips interferes with your speech patterns or functionality causing embarrassment, or affects your self-confidence.
A lip reduction can be performed at any age but most commonly during the mid to late teens.
The operation can be done under local anaesthesia, with or without sedation, and the incision is hidden completely inside the mouth. Your surgeon will remove a strip of lip mucosa (the red skin of the lip), along with some of the deeper lip tissue, then stitch it with either dissolvable or non-dissolvable type sutures. Non-dissolvable sutures will be removed 7-10 days after the procedure.
Lip Reduction is a simple procedure and takes less than an hour to perform. The lips will be swollen and sore for two to four days after surgery. The area may also feel numb for a while and you will find that drinking and eating may be difficult.
Though the change can be apparent immediately after surgery, swelling will take up to two weeks to fully subside, and the final result may not be evident for 3-4 months.
Lip Reduction is permanent and provides a natural looking lip shape. Fortunately, significant complications from this procedure are infrequent.
