Hair Transplant & Restoration

Hair loss is primarily caused by a combination of ageing, a change in hormones, and a family history of baldness.

As a rule, the earlier hair loss begins, the more severe the baldness will become. Hair loss can also be caused by burns or trauma, in which case hair replacement surgery is considered a reconstructive treatment.

Hair transplantation (hair grafting) is the movement of one’s own hair follicles from one part of the scalp to another.  Once in their new location, the follicles grow completely normal hairs, which often look stronger and healthier than surrounding existing hairs.  Hair transplants can be performed in men and women, and even eyebrows and eyelashes can be transplanted.

If you and your doctor have determined that hair transplants are the best option for you, you can feel comfortable knowing that surgeons have been successfully performing this type of procedure for more than thirty years.

There are several methods of surgery. One is to replace individual hairs or groups of hair. This is called grafting or transplantation. The surgeon uses small plugs of hair called mini or micro grafts. At any one time 250 to 750 miniature plugs are inserted.

Another method is to excise the bald area and replace it with flaps (scalp flap surgery) of hair bearing skin. This is scalp skin with normal hair that is moved into a new position. These operations are done under either local anaesthetic (you are awake) or general anaesthetic (you are asleep). Most of the time these are outpatient operations and a stay in the hospital is not needed. Some hair transplants are inserted in the office setting.

The recovery takes one to two weeks. Most people are back at work within a day or two after hair transplants and week or two after scalp flap surgery.
