How Do I Choose a Doctor?

In the field of cosmetic/plastic surgery and treatments there is seldom only one ‘best’ doctor for any procedure, and there is no precise formula for choosing the right doctor/surgeon.

Cosmetic/Plastic surgeons specialise in many different areas and most are not experts in every area.

If you have been considering having some cosmetic work done, you have probably been collecting names of doctors from friends, T.V, the Internet and newspapers. The most important credential a doctor has is his or her professional reputation.

Before scheduling a consultation with a doctor, visit their website and request brochures describing their practice. Request their bio or CV relating to the procedure/s you are investigating and find out how often the doctor performs the procedure. Get to know as much as you can about the doctor before you make the appointment.

Don’t hesitate to verify the doctor’s medical license, certifications and their professional society memberships. Make sure the doctor is a reputable member of an organisation of doctors/surgeons who specialise, and that he/she has documented education in performing the procedures you are considering.

Don’t be afraid to consult with more than one doctor/surgeon. Find out in advance about the range of fees so you can be prepared to stay within your budget. Once your initial list is narrowed down, start scheduling your appointments.  You may end up coming back to the first doctor on your list but at least you will have some comparison and you will be more comfortable with your final choice.

Prepare a list of key questions to bring with you to your consultation so you don't forget anything important to ask, and take notes. There will be a lot of information to absorb during the initial visit and you will forget most of what he/she tells you, so writing it all down will be helpful later on.

You will need to know the basics of the procedure and how they apply directly to you. It is your responsibility to convey your goals to the doctor. You are not expected to know exactly what you need on your own, but you should be able to explain as clearly as possible what it is that you want to change or improve and why.

Looking at a doctor's album of before-and-after photo's can give you some indication of their ability, but they cannot guarantee the result you will achieve. Each person is different and the outcome of your procedure will be dependant upon factors relating to your own physicality.

Fees for cosmetic surgery vary widely depending on the extent of the procedure, the number of procedures being done in one stage and the amount of time it will take to perform.

It is never wise to choose a doctor for a cosmetic procedure solely on the basis of cost. Fees quoted should be all inclusive. Ask for a breakdown so you understand all of the costs involved.

You should always see the doctor who will be performing your procedure at least twice before the operation. This second meeting should leave you feeling confident that you have made the right choice.

Disregard any doctor who:

  • tries to convince you to have a procedure that isn't related to the area or problem you've come to him/her for
  • dismisses the risks involved in surgery or isn't open about possible complications
  • guarantees results
  • doesn't recommend a preliminary physical examination
  • refuses to show before-and-after pictures of other patients
  • does not routinely perform the procedure you are interested in

Continue your search for the right doctor if you:

  • did not feel comfortable with the staff or the cleanliness of the office
  • did not feel you could ask questions freely
  • were not treated courteously or respectfully
