Breast Surgery - Enlargement
There are many reasons why women wish to improve their breast size or shape: because they feel that their breasts are too small, uneven in size, not firm enough or just unattractive; they have breasts that do not fully develop; their breasts may have significantly changed in size or shape after pregnancy or weight change, or as a result of ageing.
However, the decision to undergo breast augmentation surgery should always be a personal one; you should not consider this breast surgery procedure to please someone else.
Breast augmentation is the operation where artificial means (implants) are used to increase the size or improve the shape of the breasts. These implants can contain saline, silicone gel, or a mixture of saline and silicone gel.
There are essentially four different approaches to breast augmentation surgery. The method of inserting and positioning your implant will depend on your anatomy and your surgeon's recommendation. The incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola, or in the armpit area. A fourth option is to have an endoscopic procedure, with placement of the implant through the belly button. However, this last approach should only be performed by a surgeon very experienced in this technique.
The most popular method is insertion of the implant into a pocket in the breast tissue, via an incision some 5cms long along the crease under the breast. Working through the incision, the surgeon will lift your breast tissue and skin to create a pocket; either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath the chest wall muscle called the pectoral muscle. The implants are then centered beneath your nipples. The incision is then closed with hidden dissolving sutures and either covered with a light dressing or supported with two layers of adhesive tape.
Following a breast enlargement procedure the breasts will be tender and swollen for a few days. It is fairly common for the skin above the incision to feel somewhat numb for some months following breast augmentation, but this rarely extends to the nipple. Some patients describe increased sensation that can last for two to three months.
Scars are a consideration following a breast enlargement procedure; they are noticeable initially following breast surgery but assume normal skin colour in time, dependent upon the healing characteristics of the individual.
The best candidates for breast surgery are women who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the waythat they look. If you are healthy and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate. Your decision to have breast surgery is a highly personal one, which not everyone will understand. The important thing is how you feel about it; if you have met your goals then your surgery was a success.
