Breast Augmentation
(Breast Implants)
Breast Augmentation (Breast Implants), technically known as Augmentation Mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breasts.
Breast implants will enhance the body contour of a woman who feels her breast size is too small, correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy or balance a difference in breast size (breast asymmetry).

There are two types of implants – SALINE (salt water) and SILICONE GEL - both types of implants are surrounded by a silicone shell. The implants are placed either behind the breast tissue (SUB-GLANDULAR) or behind the pectoral muscle (SUB-MUSCULAR).
Incisions are placed under the breast (infra-mammary), around the nipple (peri-areolar) or in the armpit (trans-axillary). The INFRA-MAMMARY incision is placed beneath the breast in the fold or crease. This incision allows easy access and good visualisation for the surgeon. He or she will take into account the lowering of your breast fold that may occur when placing breast implants, so your incision may fall below where your crease currently lies.
The PERI-AREOLAR incision is a semi-circular shape along the lower half of the areola, the pinkish-brown area surrounding the nipple. Many surgeons and patients alike prefer this incision because the scar is usually barely perceptible once it has healed.
The TRANS-AXILLARY incision is placed inside the armpit. An endoscope (a tiny camera) and long tools are used since the surgeon will not be able to see inside the breast directly. The surgeon separates the tissues and creates the pocket both by feel and by watching the surgery on a video monitor.
Your surgeon will determine which approach would be most appropriate for you.
Implants also have either a SMOOTH or TEXTURED surface, regardless of whether it contains saline or silicone. Smooth implants tend to be less palpable (less likely to be felt) than the textured implants because the shell is thinner.
Implant shapes come in ROUND, TEARDROP (also called anatomic or contoured shape), HIGH PROFILE and LOW PROFILE. Your surgeon will recommend one that's best for you based on your current breast tissue distribution, your proportions, and the final result that you desire.
Risks associated with Breast Augmentation: loss of nipple sensation, implant rupture or shifting, asymmetry, infection, haematoma, capsular contracture and visible implant rippling. Your doctor will discuss these risks with you as part of your initial consultation.
Breast Augmentation surgery takes 1-3 hours and is most commonly performed under general anaesthesia.
Average Price Range: $6500-$12000.
